European Voices

Cookie Policy

of „Die Presse“ Verlags-Gesellschaft m. b. H. & Co KG

(Status 05-02-2024)

0. General information

This cookie policy contains information for users (hereinafter referred to as „users“ or „you“) on the use of cookies and similar technologies on the europeanvoices.eu website of „Die Presse“ Verlags-Gesellschaft m.b.H. & Co KG, Hainburger Straße 33, 1030 Vienna (hereinafter referred to as „Die Presse“, „we“ or „provider“).

The europeanvoices.eu website of „Die Presse“ uses so-called cookies, device identifiers and similar technologies (hereinafter referred to collectively as „cookies“), with the help of which the digital products and services of „Die Presse“ (hereinafter referred to collectively as „our online offerings“) can be used more easily and efficiently and the usage habits of users can be analysed for the purpose of continuously improving our online offerings. Cookies can also be used to display adverts and to tailor adverts to the individual interests of users and their usage habits.

Other guidelines may apply to any other digital platforms offered by „Die Presse“. Separate information on the use of cookies is provided for these platforms.

This cookie policy can be adapted by „Die Presse“ to the current circumstances at any time. The current version of this cookie policy can be viewed or accessed by users when using the digital platforms of „Die Presse“.

Cookies are either set by „Die Presse“ itself or by certain technical service providers (hereinafter also referred to as „third-party providers“) used by „Die Presse“ or advertisers/advertising agencies that place advertisements on the digital platforms of „Die Presse“ (for more information, see point 3 of this cookie policy).

Under point 1 of this cookie policy, you will find more detailed information about cookies and how you can consent to them or revoke consent you have already given, as well as how you can object to the processing of data collected on the basis of your consent to cookies that are based on a legitimate interest. In sections 2 and 3 of this cookie policy, we inform you in detail about the purposes for which cookies are set and how you can control cookies on the digital platforms of „Die Presse“. In section 4 of this cookie policy, we provide you with information on how you can manage and delete cookies, depending on which browser and end device you use. And finally, under point 5 of this cookie policy, you can find out about the use of services from external providers that you can access via our digital platforms.

Note: Some of the following information contains links to external websites. We would like to emphasise that we do not identify with the content of the websites linked to below and exclude any liability in this respect. Accessing the linked websites is therefore at your own risk.

1. What are cookies and when are they set?

1.1. Cookies are text files that are stored on the user‘s computer or smartphone. They typically contain information about websites visited by the user, which the browser saves when surfing the internet. Cookies enable the user to be recognised when they visit the website again and can therefore be used, for example, to ensure that a user does not have to log in to a website again once they have logged in. Cookies are also suitable for storing and transmitting information about the user‘s surfing behaviour.

1.2. Cookies are used to improve the quality of service, including the storage of user preferences, as well as for recommending content and search results, and for tracking user trends, such as which content users like to consume. This makes it possible to analyse the use of digital platforms and gain valuable insights into the needs of users. These findings help to further improve the quality of digital platforms and to better market digital platforms.

1.3. In principle, cookies may only be set on the basis of the user‘s prior, active consent (for exceptions, see Section 1.8 and Section 1.9 of this cookie policy). If you wish to use our online services, we will therefore first obtain your consent (hereinafter also referred to as „consent“) to the setting of cookies. For this purpose, when you access the website and the app, a window (hereinafter referred to as the „cookie banner“) appears with information on the purposes for which we and third-party providers (hereinafter also referred to collectively as „providers“) wish to use cookies. You can generally consent to the use of cookies for the purposes listed in the cookie banner by clicking on the „Accept all“ button in the cookie banner.

1.4. You can use the „Manage settings“ button in the cookie banner to select whether or not you wish to allow cookies for each of the purposes or providers listed there. To do this, you must click on the „Save and close“ button in the cookie banner after you have made your selection. You can generally reject the setting of cookies via the „Reject all“ button (for the exceptions, see points 1.8 and 1.9 of this cookie policy).

1.5. If you consent to all or some of the purposes listed in the cookie banner, this consent applies to all providers listed in the cookie banner who request your consent for these purposes. However, you can also give your consent to only one or some of the providers listed in the cookie banner. In this case, your consent covers all purposes for which the provider or providers have requested your consent.

1.6. Your consent to us only applies to our online services (service-related). The scope of your consent vis-à-vis the third-party providers depends on the privacy policy of the respective third-party provider (service-related, per group of companies or worldwide). You can find the privacy policies of the individual third-party providers in the cookie banner by selecting any third-party provider from the list of all third-party providers and clicking on „Show privacy policy“. You can access the list of all third-party providers by first clicking on the „Manage settings“ button and then on „Providers“ at the top right.

1.7. Once given consent or selection to cookies can be revoked by the user at any time via the link „Cookie settings„ in the footer of the website or changed again with regard to the cookies set, also separately for each purpose or provider. In addition, the user can also deactivate cookies globally via the browser by selecting the appropriate browser settings. Please note that you may not be able to use our online services, or only to a limited extent, if you do not allow certain cookies.

1.8. According to the current legal situation (Section 165 (3) TKG 2021), certain cookies can also be set without your prior consent. This exception applies to cookies that are technically necessary for the provision of our online services. These cookies are referred to as „Strictly Necessary Cookies“ in the cookie banner and are described in more detail there and in section 2.1. and section 3.1. of this cookie policy.

1.9. In some cases, providers base the (further) processing of data collected by means of cookies on a legitimate interest instead of your consent. However, this presupposes that you have previously consented to the purpose of „storing and/or retrieving information on a device“ (see in detail under point 2.2 of this cookie policy) in the cookie banner. This means that without your consent to store information on your device and/or to retrieve information already stored on your device, no data processing based on a legitimate interest will take place.

You can object to the (further) processing of data collected on the basis of your consent to cookies based on a legitimate interest at any time by setting the slider for „Legitimate interest„ from green to red in the cookie banner under „Manage privacy settings per purpose„ or „Manage privacy settings per provider„ and then clicking on the „Save and close„ button. In this case, your data will no longer be processed for the respective purpose or by the respective provider, unless the provider‘s legitimate reasons for processing outweigh your reasons. The provider‘s legitimate grounds for data processing based on a legitimate interest prevail in particular in the case of processing for the „special purposes“ described in the cookie banner and under point 2.10. of this cookie policy.

You can access „Manage privacy settings per purpose„ by first clicking on „Manage settings“ in the cookie banner and then selecting one of the purposes displayed there. You can access „Manage privacy settings per provider„ by first clicking on „Manage settings“ in the cookie banner and, after selecting one of the purposes displayed there, selecting a provider that is based on a legitimate interest. Alternatively, you can call up the list of providers by first clicking on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner and then on „Providers„ in the top right-hand corner. By clicking on any provider from the list, you can determine for each provider the purposes for which this provider relies on a legitimate interest and, if necessary, object to the processing.

1.10. When obtaining your consent to cookies and the (further) processing of data collected on the basis of your consent to cookies based on a legitimate interest, we adhere to the so-called „Transparency and Consent Framework“ of the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe (hereinafter referred to as „IAB Europe“). This is a voluntary commitment by the international advertising industry with the aim of ensuring that the decision made by a user regarding cookies (full consent to cookies — consent only for certain purposes and/or providers — no consent to cookies) is also followed consistently across different digital platforms. Further information on the Transparency and Consent Framework can be found on the IAB Europe website at: https://iabeurope.eu/transparency-consent-framework/.

1.11. Section 2 of this cookie policy below describes in more detail the purposes for which we and third-party providers wish to use cookies, in addition to the description in the cookie banner.

2. For what purposes are cookies set?

2.1. Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies are technically necessary for you as a user to be able to use our online services and their central functionalities. Strictly necessary cookies cannot be deactivated. However, certain browsers can block these cookies or suggest this to the user. Please note that blocking these cookies may impair or sometimes make it impossible to use our online services.

If you click on „Manage settings“ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purpose „Strictly necessary cookies„. There you can see in detail which providers set this type of cookie.

2.2. Saving/retrieving information on end devices

Data processing for the purposes listed in points 2.3. to 2.10. below and in the cookie banner is generally based on the fact that cookies, device identifiers or other information can be stored on your end device, or that cookies, device identifiers or other information already stored on your end device can be retrieved. This requires your prior consent.

If you click on „Manage settings“ in the cookie banner, you will find this purpose defined as „Store and/or retrieve information on an end device„. There you can see in detail which providers request your consent for this purpose.

2.3. Functional cookies

These cookies enable an improved user experience through an extended range of functions, such as the ability to select personal settings or use certain additional services. If these cookies are deactivated, some or all of these functions may be impaired.

If you click on „Manage settings“ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the „Functional„ purpose. There you can see in detail which providers are requesting your consent for this purpose and which providers may be relying on a legitimate interest to process your data for this purpose. You can object to the processing of your data on the basis of a legitimate interest (for more details, see point 1.9 above).

2.4. Performance and web analytics cookies

These cookies are used to measure and analyse the reach and performance of a website or app. We receive information about the number of users of the website or the number of page views via these cookies. Furthermore, these cookies collect information about the usage habits of users. Such information may include, for example, the time of day when the website is accessed most frequently or which (sub)pages are visited most often. This information is summarised and evaluated using performance and web analysis tools in order to gain insights into the use, functionality and user-friendliness of websites and apps and to be able to continuously develop them further. In turn, the online editorial team uses these cookies to gain valuable information about which topics and articles particularly appeal to users and can respond by adapting the editorial content to users‘ interests. Some of our online content is financed by advertising. Performance and web analysis cookies also provide information about the performance (number of users, number of returning users, length of stay, etc.) of a website. Advertising customers use these figures as a guide when placing their orders, as they want to reach as many people as possible with their advertising. The information obtained through performance and web analysis cookies is therefore essential for us to be able to market our online services and thus offer them to our users, partly free of charge and partly for a moderate fee.

Essentially, performance and web analytics cookies are used to improve the quality and marketing of our online services. It is neither desired nor intended to draw conclusions about the individual user.

If you click on „Manage settings“ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purposes listed below and described in more detail below:

·       Measure ad performance
The performance and effectiveness of ads you see or interact with can be measured.
 To measure ad performance, providers can:

o  measure whether and how adverts were displayed to a user and how they interacted with them;

o  provide reports on adverts, including their effectiveness and performance;

o  provide reports on user interaction with adverts based on data measured during the user‘s interaction with that advert;

o  provide reports to service providers about the adverts displayed on their services;

o  measure whether an advert is displayed in an unsuitable editorial environment (brand-unsafe);

o  determine the percentage at which the advert could have been seen, including the duration (chance of being seen).

Measuring content performance
The performance and effectiveness of content that the user sees or interacts with can be measured.
 To measure content performance, providers can:
o  measure and report on how content was delivered to users and how they interacted with it;

o  provide reports on directly measurable or already known information from users who have interacted with the content.

Use market research to gain insights into target groups
Market research can be used to learn more about the audiences that use services or applications and view adverts.
 When using market research to gain insights about target groups, providers can:
o  provide aggregated reports to advertisers or their representatives on the audiences reached by their adverts, based on survey panels or similar methods;

o  provide aggregated reports to service providers on the audiences that have been reached by or interacted with the content and/or adverts on their services, as determined by survey panels or similar methods;

o  assign offline data to an online user for the purposes of market research in order to gain insights into target groups, insofar as providers have declared that they will compare and merge offline data sources.

The above and further descriptions of the purposes mentioned can also be found in the cookie banner directly under the respective purpose under „Further information“.

By clicking on one of the purposes mentioned in the cookie banner, you can see in detail which providers are requesting your consent for the respective purpose and which providers may be relying on a legitimate interest to process your data for the respective purpose. You can object to the processing of your data on the basis of a legitimate interest (for more details, see section 1.9 of this cookie policy above).

2.5. Personalisation cookies

These cookies are used to draw conclusions about your interests and needs based on the analysis of your surfing behaviour and to be able to segment users with the same or similar interests and needs so that we can subsequently display content or advertising to you in a needs-based, interest-related and targeted manner in order to reach you optimally in your living environment. For example, articles can be recommended that are thematically similar to articles that have already been viewed, or certain content can be displayed in an order of interest. Depending on the tool used, certain identifiers (e.g. device IDs) can be assigned and user profiles can be created on this basis with various information derived from surfing behaviour and other usage data. This information cannot be traced back to specific natural persons, as the people behind the devices are not known by name.

If you click on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purposes listed below and described in more detail below:

·       Create a personalised ad profile
A profile can be created about you and your interests in order to show you personalised ads that are relevant to you.
 To create a personalised ad profile, providers can:

o  collect information about a user, including their activities, interests, visits to websites or use of applications, demographic information and location information to create or edit a user profile for the personalisation of ads.

·       Create a personalised content profile
A profile can be created about you and your interests in order to show you personalised content that is relevant to you.
 To create a personalised content profile, providers can:

o  collect information about a user, including their activities, interests, visits to websites or use of applications, demographic information and location information to create or edit a user profile for the personalisation of content.

The above and further descriptions of the purposes mentioned can also be found in the cookie banner directly under the respective purpose under „Further information„.

2.6. Advertising cookies

These cookies can be used to display advertising either purely contextually (e.g. based on the content you are currently viewing) or based on the analyses of interests and needs carried out, as described under „Personalisation cookies“, to a specific target group of users („targeting“). Re-targeting is when users are also shown interest-based advertising on other digital platforms using these cookies. These cookies are also used to control (in particular limit) the frequency with which adverts are displayed.

If you click on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purposes listed below and described in more detail below:

·       Selecting simple adverts
Adverts can be displayed to you based on the content you are viewing, the application you are using, your approximate location or your device type.
 For the selection of simple adverts, providers can:

o  use real-time information about the context in which the ad is displayed, including information about the content environment and the device used, such as device type and functions, browser identifier, URL, IP address;

o  use the approximate location data (radius of at least 500 metres) of a user;

o  control the frequency of ad insertions;

o  control the order in which the adverts are displayed;

o  prevent an advert from being displayed in an unsuitable editorial environment (brand-unsafe).

·       Select personalised ads
Personalised ads can be displayed to you based on a profile you have created.
 To select personalised ads, providers can:

o  select personalised ads based on a user profile or other historical usage data, including previous activities, interests, visits to websites or use of applications, location or demographic information.

The above and further descriptions of the purposes mentioned can also be found in the cookie banner directly under the respective purpose under „Further information„.

2.7. Recommendation cookies

Based on the analyses carried out on interests and needs, as described under „Personalisation cookies“, content can also be targeted to a specific target group of users or even individual users. For example, articles can be recommended that are thematically similar to articles that have already been viewed, or content can be displayed in an order of interest.

If you click on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purpose listed below and described in more detail below:

·       Selecting personalised content
Personalised content can be displayed to you based on a profile created about you.
 To select personalised content, providers can:

o  select personalised content based on a user profile or other historical usage data, including previous activities, interests, visits to websites or use of applications, location or demographic information.

You will also find the above and further descriptions of the stated purpose in the cookie banner directly under the stated purpose under „Further information“.

By clicking on the stated purpose in the cookie banner, you can see in detail which providers are requesting your consent for this purpose and which providers may be relying on a legitimate interest to process your data for this purpose. You can object to the processing of your data on the basis of a legitimate interest (for more details, see section 1.9 of this cookie policy above).

2.8. Social media

Our online offerings (e.g. in news articles) may include content that has previously been published in certain social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.). In order for this embedded content from social media to be displayed to you, it is necessary for social media providers to be able to store or retrieve information on your end device. This is done by means of cookies or similar technologies by the providers of the respective social media. If these cookies are deactivated, integrated content from the respective social media cannot be displayed to you.

Certain social media providers also use these cookies to track your activities on various websites and to create a user profile so that content relevant to you, including adverts, can be displayed on other sites you visit.

If you click on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purpose „Social media„. There you can see in detail which providers request your consent for this purpose and which providers may rely on a legitimate interest to process your data for this purpose. You can object to the processing of your data on the basis of a legitimate interest (for more details, see section 1.9 of this cookie policy above).

2.9. Product development

We may also use data collected by means of cookies to improve our existing online services and/or to develop new online services. For example, we can improve the user-friendliness of our online services by carrying out tests on how certain functionalities are used by users or where content should be placed to make it easier for users to find. To do this, we sometimes use third-party products, such as feedback tools or screen recording tools to track user behaviour in the various regions that use cookies.

If you click on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner, you will find these cookies under the purpose listed below and described in more detail below:

·       Develop and improve products
Your data can be used to improve existing systems and software and to develop new products.
 To develop and improve products, providers can:

o  use information to improve their existing products with new functions and to develop new products;

o  use information to improve the customer journey

o  create new calculation models and algorithms with the help of machine learning.

You will also find the above and further descriptions of the stated purpose in the cookie banner directly under the stated purpose under „Further information„.

2.10. Special purposes

For the purposes listed in the cookie banner and below (hereinafter referred to as „Special Purposes“), we and the third-party providers may process your data on the basis of a legitimate interest. We and the third-party providers have compelling legitimate grounds for this processing, which is why you cannot object to this processing in the cookie banner. However, the processing of your data for a special purpose based on a legitimate interest requires that you have previously consented to the purpose of „storing and/or retrieving information on a device“ (see in detail under point 2.2 of this cookie policy) in the cookie banner. This means that without your consent to store information on your device and/or to retrieve information already stored on your device, no data processing based on a legitimate interest will take place.

Special purposes are the following:

·       Ensuring security, preventing fraud, troubleshooting
Your data (e.g. automatically sent device properties, location data, etc.) can be used to identify and prevent fraudulent activity and to ensure that systems and processes function properly and securely. To ensure security, prevent fraud and rectify errors, providers may:

o  ensure that data is transmitted securely;

o  detect and prevent harmful, fraudulent, invalid or illegal activities;

o  ensure the correct and efficient operation of systems and processes — including monitoring and improving the performance of systems and processes — within the scope of the authorised processing purposes.

·       Provide adverts or content technically
The user‘s device can receive and send information that is necessary for the user to view and use content and adverts.
 To provide information data and to respond to technical requests, providers may:

o  use the IP address of a user to display an advert via the Internet;

o  react to a user‘s interaction with an advert by redirecting the user to a target page;

o  use the IP address of a user to provide content via the Internet;

o  react to a user‘s interaction with content by redirecting the user to a target page;

o  use information about the device type and its capabilities to display adverts or content, e.g. to provide adverts or video files in the correct size and in a format supported by the device.

2.11. Functions / Special functions

The processing of your data collected by means of cookies may include certain functions that serve the aforementioned purposes. These functions are only used if your data may be processed for the purpose for which these functions are used, i.e. if your consent or a legitimate interest exists (see point 1.3 and point 1.9 of this cookie policy for details). Therefore, separate consent is not required for these functions in accordance with the Transparency and Consent Framework of IAB Europe, unless special functions are involved (see below).

Functions that do not require separate consent are:

·       Merging with offline data sources:
 Data from your online activities can be merged with data from offline data sources. In doing so, providers:

o  merge data collected offline with data collected online in order to use it for one or more additional processing purposes (including special purposes)

·       Link different devices
To use for one or more processing purposes, you can determine whether different devices belong to you or your household. In doing so, providers can:

o  determine that two or more devices clearly belong to the same user or household („deterministic identification“);

o  determine that two or more devices belong to the same user or household with a certain probability („probabilistic identification“);

o  actively query device properties for probabilistic identification, provided the user has given their consent to actively query device properties (see immediately below).

·       Receiving and using automatically sent device properties for identification
Your end device can be differentiated from other end devices based on information that it sends automatically, such as IP address or browser type. In doing so, providers can:

o  create an identifier using automatically transmitted device properties such as IP address or browser identifier;

o  use such an identifier to try to recognise an end device;

Special functions that require the separate consent of the user are:

·       Use precise location data
Your precise location data can be used for one or more processing purposes („precise location data“ means that there are no restrictions on the accuracy of the location; this can be accurate to within a few metres). Providers can:

o  process precise location data in order to use it for one or more processing purposes.

·       Actively query device properties for identification
Your end device can be recognised by querying its specific characteristics. In doing so, providers can:

o  create an identifier from data obtained from the active query of certain properties of a device (e.g. the installed fonts or the screen resolution)

o  use such an identifier to re-identify an end device.

These special functions are only used by us and/or third-party providers if you have given your consent to this via the cookie banner.

2.12. Cookies from advertisers (including advertising agencies)

The distribution of third-party advertising in our online offerings is not only an important part of our business model, but also the prerequisite for the fact that essential parts of our online offerings can be made available free of charge. If an advertiser‘s advertisement is displayed or clicked on, cookies are usually also set by means of the advertising medium, provided you have consented to this. These cookies are therefore not created by us, but directly by the advertiser or a third-party provider used by the advertiser (hereinafter referred to collectively as „third parties“). This allows the advertiser to obtain valuable information about the effectiveness of their adverts, such as information about how many users were shown the advert or how often the advert was shown in full. The cookies associated with the advertising material can also be used to track a user‘s visits to all pages on which the advert is displayed. Cookies in advertising media can therefore be used to analyse the performance of the specific advertisement as well as for targeting or re-targeting purposes.

Cookies from third parties can therefore fall into all of the cookie categories mentioned above, serve all of the purposes listed therein and also include the functions and special functions mentioned above. We ourselves (i) do not receive any of the information that the third party generates via the cookies associated with the advertising material, (ii) cannot influence the means or purposes of the third party‘s processing and (iii) do not derive any benefit of our own from this information.

3. Which cookies are used on the digital platforms of „Die Presse“ and how can they be controlled?

3.1. Strictly necessary cookies

The „Strictly necessary cookies“ listed below are used in our online offerings. In accordance with the applicable legal situation, this is done without your consent. If you wish to reject these cookies, we recommend that you do this globally via the browser. Please note that in this case our online services will not be available to you or only to a limited extent:

JSESSIONID: This cookie ensures an even distribution of user requests in our server architecture;

US LAST USE: contains the last page called up;

ref-token: As acc-token only has a limited period of validity, a new acc-token is generated via the ref-token when it expires;

gdpr-auditId: Selection and changes to cookie settings are saved and linked to an audit ID. This enables statements to be made about the status of consent (including for the past);

gdpr-dau-log-sent: The number of daily active users is counted for reporting purposes. This cookie is used to determine whether the current user has already been counted;

geo-location: This cookie contains the approximate current location of the user and is used for statistical purposes.

3.2. Other cookie categories

On our digital platforms and the advertising media displayed on our digital platforms, all cookies described under points 2.2. to 2.10. of this cookie policy may be used, or data collected by means of cookies may be processed for all purposes explained under points 2.2. to 2.10., provided that

1.     you have given us your consent to the use of cookies for the respective purpose via the cookie banner, and/or

2.     the (further) processing of data collected by means of cookies is based on a legitimate interest and you have not objected to the processing, or the legitimate grounds for data processing based on a legitimate interest prevail (applies in particular to processing carried out for „Special Purposes“ as described in the cookie banner and under point 2.10. of this cookie policy). However, the (further) processing of your data collected by means of cookies based on a legitimate interest requires that you have previously consented to the purpose „Store and/or retrieve information on a device“ in the cookie banner. This means that without your consent to store information on your device and/or to retrieve information already stored on your device, no data processing based on a legitimate interest will take place.

The individual advertisers/advertising agencies, as well as we ourselves, sometimes use technical service providers („third-party providers“) for the placement of the cookies described under points 2.2. to 2.10. and for the processing of the data collected by means of cookies for the purposes explained under points 2.2. to 2.10. Third-party providers that set cookies on our digital platforms are named in our cookie banner and can be accessed individually there with just a few clicks. The third-party providers are assigned to the following purposes (also mentioned above under 2.2. to 2.10.) in this order in the cookie banner under „Manage settings“:

·       Store and/or retrieve information on a device

·       Select simple adverts

·       Create a personalised ad profile

·       Select personalised ads

·       Create a personalised content profile

·       Select personalised content

·       Measure advert performance

·       Measure content performance

·       Use market research to gain insights into target groups

·       Developing and improving products

·       Functional

·       Social media

·       Ensure security, prevent fraud, rectify errors

·       Making adverts or content technically available

The allocation to the purposes mentioned is based on the type of cookies set by us or the third-party providers, or the group into which the respective cookie falls. A third-party provider can either fall under just one or several of the stated purposes. An overview of the individual third-party providers and their assignment to the individual purposes can be found in the cookie banner in the „Provider„ tab. In the respective privacy policy of the third-party providers shown there, which can be accessed in the cookie banner of the respective third-party provider, you will also find information on how cookies from this third-party provider can be deactivated.

3.3. Functions / Special functions

If you click on „Manage settings„ in the cookie banner and scroll down the list of purposes, you can see under „Functions“ for each of the functions and special functions listed under point 2.11. of this cookie policy which providers use the respective function or request your consent for the respective special function. If a certain function or special function is not displayed, this means that the function is not used by any provider or that no provider is requesting your consent for the special function.

3.4. Device identifiers for mobile applications („apps“)

Device identifiers (also known as „device IDs“) are identification codes that allow individual mobile devices to be recognised („identified“), but not individual users.

We use device identifiers for our apps in order to be able to offer certain functionalities, adapt content and adverts to the usage habits of users, provide functions for social media and evaluate access with the help of the analysis tools listed below.

By technically integrating the SDKs (software development kits) of the providers listed below into our apps, we enable them to analyse the information required for the provision of their services. In addition to the device ID, this may include information about: e.g. device type, operating system, installed app version, etc.

Using the device identifier on Android

The Android app of „Die Presse“ uses the device identifier (Android ID or device ID) to provide the push notification functions (action alert) for users who are not logged in. We use the Android ID to identify the device, but not the user themselves. The Android ID is a 64-bit binary number that is randomly generated when the device is first set up and converted into a hexadecimal format. This Android ID does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the user themselves.

We identify logged-in users in our Android app using their login data or a session token in addition to the device identification via Android ID. The login enables the provision of all functionalities such as subscription key and commenting etc. The session token enables us to identify the user. If a user does not wish to do this, they can log out via the „Log out“ option on their profile page, which in turn only identifies the device (via the Android ID).

Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA)

The IDFA is a unique number that is assigned to your Apple device. With your voluntary consent, we process this IDFA in order to better understand the interests and usage behaviour of the Apple device user and to display tailored advertising and offers to the user in our app. The IDFA makes it possible to identify a specific Apple device, but not the specific user.

You can change your IDFA settings at any time via your Apple device and thus also revoke your consent at any time without giving reasons. If you do not consent to the processing of IDFA, you will continue to be shown adverts and offers, but these will not be tailored to the interests of the user.
